Biography:
Russian born Ilya Repin learned to paint under icon painter, Bunakov. He then received a scholarship to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, where he remained for six years before continuing to study in France and Italy. Repin was given the position of Professor of Historical Painting at St. Petersburg in 1894. His paintings had social messages and reflected his peasant upbringing. In the early 1920’s, Lenin and Stalin favored Repin’s paintings because of their nationalist appeal. His work also influenced many Russian artists of the 1930’s and 40’s.
